Claerwen reservoir , Elan Valley

Sunday 17 th feb 2002

This weeks update is from a walk around the Claerwen Dam in the Elan Valley near Rhayader , Powys. Saturday gave us hours of sunshine making a very pleasant day for walking a nice change from the last few weeks here in the U.K. The deep black water providing some good reflection opportunities for Photographing - all pics can be clicked on to view at 1024 x 768.

Claerwen Dam
Claerwen dam
The main Dam wall shown below right , built between september 1946 and october 1952 and forms the Reservoir over 4 miles long with a top water area of 650 acres .The Dam wall stands 240 feet high.( well that's what it says on the info plate anyway ! ) The Elan Valley Dams can be found on Ordnance Survey Landranger Map 147 and the Path start at Grid SN872636. If you are ever visiting the Mid wales area a drive around the network of roads the Elan Valley has is a must !

Reflections , Elan Valley
For those who like to venture off the main paths it's worth pointing out that the area is relatively featureless from a map reading point and can make 'difficult' walking with many Peat bogs - it's not too uncommon to sink in up to the waist- or is that just me !!!!!!!
My last contribution from earlier the same morning with the Mist burning off from the Cwmchwefru Valley near Llanafan Fawr , Powys.
