This particular section is really aimed at the person who is considering what advantages Digital Photography can give over the Film Cameras we all have used for probably all our lives - my trusty Nikon 35 mm still gathers dust as I just cannot go back to Film now.......but why....read on..........
Probably most that are interested have seen a print produced from a Digital camera and remember the low resolution jagged images that they produced - well that was the fact maybe only two years ago but thing have changed dramatically.Digital photography is just another method of producing an artificial image. With conventional Photography light sensitive particles in the film and paper will produce an image in man made dyes in the paper - Digital photography uses an image sensor , known as a charge coupled device ( CCD ) to convert the picture to a stored electronic code in what is called 'Memory' which can be transferred at a later date to a personal computer which will then use a program to print out the picture on paper using - yes you guessed- it man made dyes.
So two methods producing similar results - I have been party to many discussions about the pro's and cons and basically it's down to the individual but one thing is for sure ..technology is standing still for no man and Digital is hot on the heels of even the professional photographers , I was a bit of a doubter until I actually used it for myself , I say to the amateur photographer who spends all that time in the Darkroom ( you can always tell them , they've got big eyes ! ) - Once you start with digital it is very likely you will not go back............. Most digital cameras also have a Video Output - this allows you to plug a cable into your camera and connect it directly to the 'video in' on your TV.By selecting the appropriate channel/AV input you will be able to view your pictures without a Personal computer - you can even connect to your video and record them onto tape to share with others. The later Printers now also have a facility where you can plug in the Memory card from your camera (this is really the equivalent of the film ) and print out your pictures again without a personal Computer.

With having a P.C. the world of digital photography really comes into it's own as you can load the pictures stored on your memory card onto your pc and use Image editing programs to manipulate and correct them. The beauty of this is this can be done literally within minutes of taking them. If you have an internet connection you can then attach the pictures to an e-mail and send to friends and family.

So if your still wondering about whether Digital photography is for you consider the following....

Immediate results - cost of wasted photographs - being able to shoot literally hundreds of photographs on one small memory Card ( the price of these cards is dropping all the time )

knowing you got the exposure wrong just after you have taken it

Correcting the colour casts/contrasts while enjoying a drink in daylight ( this excludes Vampires of course )

being able to share them with others at the click of a button - ( sometimes !! )

I shall be continuing the subject in a more depth soon.........check back
